LOUISIANA-BUILDING-IMPLOSION -- Lake Charles was devastated by hurricanes Laura and Delta in 2020. One of the main symbols of hurricanes' destruction and snail-like pace of recovery for the city is the Hertz Tower, formerly known as the Capital One Tower, which is still standing vacant. The 21-story skyscraper, which is the dominate feature of the Lake Charles skyline, has shattered windows and shredded tarps covering bits of it. SAFE-STREETS -- Transportation officials are hoping a major investment in a technology allowing cars to talk to other cars about hazards on the road could be part of the solution to a recent surge in traffic deaths. The concept, known as vehicle-to-everything or V2X, has been in the works for years, but just last month U.S. officials released a national blueprint. The growth isn't surprising. The technology is being rapidly adopted by scores of powerful sectors -- healthcare, defense, financial services -- that hope to steer regulations and legislation. UPCOMING: 1,000 words, photos by 7 a.m.
GRAND-CANYON-PIPELINE-BREAKS -- Recent breaks in a pipeline that's the Grand Canyon's only water source forced officials to impose water restrictions and cancel overnight stays at local hotels, upending some visitors' Labor Day plans.
