ELECTION-2024-RANKED-CHOICE-VOTING -- Election reform advocates had hoped for a big year at the ballot box. That's because an historic number of states were considering initiatives for ranked choice voting or to end partisan primaries. Instead, voters dealt them big losses in the November elections. Voters in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and South Dakota all rejected proposed changes to their elections. ELECTION-2024-MONTANA-SENATE -- Democrats' crushing loss in Montana's nationally important U.S. Senate race settled a fierce political debate over whether a surge of newcomers over the past decade favored Republicans. It also addressed the question of whether one of the new arrivals could even take high office. Voters answered with an emphatic "yes" to both. One party now rules Montana for the first time since mining barons known as the Copper Kings had a corrupt chokehold on the state's politics more than a century ago. MED-OBESITY-DRUG-NONRESPONDERS -- Most people taking popular drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to lose weight have shed significant pounds. AP-ELECTION-2024-VOTECAST-BLACK-WOMEN -- After Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential race, many Black women who have been politically engaged said they are pulling back after carrying an outsized share of the work to get out the vote and support the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris. AP VoteCast, a 2024 survey of registered voters, found about 6 in 10 Black women said the future of democracy in the U.S. was the single most important factor for their vote, which was higher than other demographic groups. In the wake of the presidential election, the upcoming marking of Thanksgiving and the ramp-up of the holiday season could be a boon for some - a respite from the events of the larger world in the gathering of family and loved ones, hours and even days spent with people who have played the largest roles in our lives, another chapter in a lifetime of memories.
